Times Square: The site in New York City where one of the most famous yearly New Year's ball drops occurs. Millions gather here to welcome the New Year.

Tournament of Roses Parade: A nationally viewed parade that takes place in Pasadena, Calif., on the morning of New Year's Day. The parade, which features elaborate floral floats, was founded in 1886. Also see "Rose Parade."

vernal equinox: The first day of spring. In Babylonian times, the New Year was celebrated on the first new moon after the vernal equinox.

Watch Night: Many religious communities celebrate New Year's Eve as Watch Night and attend worship services that go past midnight and into the New Year. Watch Night observers use this time to give thanks for the past year and pray for prosperity and good things in the New Year.
