paganism: Anything that refers to a folk religion or religion outside the main church; the Catholic Church originally viewed New Year's celebrations as paganism.

Robert Burns: Writer of Auld Lang Syne, the traditional New Year's song, which was first published in 1796 after his death.

Rose Bowl: The yearly football game that is traditionally played near the New Year in conjunction with the Tournament of Roses Parade and other New Year's traditions.

Rose Parade: A parade annually held on New Year's Day in Pasadena, Calif., prior to the Rose Bowl. Also see "Tournament of Roses Parade."

stocking up: One New Year's superstition states that the New Year must not begin with empty cupboards or wallets. If it does, the household will be lacking throughout the year. Everything must be stocked up to ensure continued prosperity.
